Louis Hughes (c. 1832-1913) was an African-American born into slavery in Virginia. He was enslaved for over thirty years, mostly in Tennessee and Mississippi, before escaping to freedom near the end of the Civil War. After emancipation, he settled in Milwaukee, where he became a nurse and businessman, and authored his memoir recounting his experiences.
