Harriet Jacobs (1813 or 1815 â 1897) was an African-American abolitionist and writer born into slavery in Edenton, North Carolina. She is best known for her autobiography, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Written by Herself (1861), which is considered a classic slave narrative and a pioneering work in African American and women's literature. Jacobs used the pseudonym Linda Brent in her narrative and was a prominent figure in the abolitionist movement.
