Nelle Harper Lee (1926–2016) was an American novelist best known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird (1960), a powerful depiction of racism and prejudice in the American South. She lived much of her life between Monroeville, Alabama, and New York City, and was known for her reclusive nature after her initial success. Lee received numerous honors for her contribution to literature, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007 and the National Medal of Arts in 2010.
