Anna Sewell (1820â1878) was an English novelist best known for her only published work, Black Beauty, which became a classic of children's literature and a powerful plea for the humane treatment of horses. She wrote the novel while bedridden due to illness, dictating or writing on slips of paper that her mother transcribed. Sewell was born into a Quaker family and was deeply influenced by her mother's writing and their shared religious values.
